Sen. Gillibrand: Please support fight against TB

Dear Senator Gillibrand,

I'm writing now on behalf of NYC Results to see if you would be willing to sign on to the attached letter from Sen. Brown to ask for support from the Foreign Operations Subcommittee of Appropriations for TB funding.

  • TB is the leading curable infectious killer of adults in the world, claiming 1.7 million lives each year.
  • TB is the leading killer of people with HIV/AIDS, and threatens to roll back progress made fighting that disease.
  • Drug resistant TB knows no borders, and the Department of Homeland Security has identified the most extreme form of drug-resistant TB as an "emerging threat to the homeland."

This is a case where people are dying (not just getting sick, but dying) of a curable disease simply due to lack of support from the developed world. The relative small amount of funding will be saving lives abroad, and, by halting the spread of drug-resistant TB, at home.

To sign on you can contact David Mitchell at david_mitchell@brown.senate.gov (or 4-2645).

Again, the deadline for sign-on is this Monday, July 6th.

I'll be in touch later this week if I don't hear back to see if there are any reservations about signing the letter. If you have different priorities for Foreign Operations Appropriations that this request would infringe upon I'd be happy to discuss these.

Most importantly, thanks again so much for your time and hard work. If there's any way we can be of assistance on foreign aid or NYC constituent issues please do let me know.

Yours,

Dave
